How fit would I have to be for climbing Mt Kilimanjaro & Meru?

People with age from 10 years of age and different fitness levels have a good chance to making the climb. To better equip our climbers, at Northland Adventures, we offer a Fitness Assessment and with the results, we will customize a Fitness Program/Regiment that is tailored to each individual’s lifestyle, health & fitness level.

What kind of gear would I need to climb Mt Kilimanjaro and Meru?

What is the weather like?

In Kilimanjaro: Daytime temperatures range between 20⁰ - 27⁰ Celsius depending on the month. The sun can be very high on Kilimanjaro so it is important that you pack a high factor sun protection cream. Night time temperatures can range from 2⁰-3⁰ Celsius on the Shira Plateau, to as low as -10⁰. For those climbing in May there is the slight possibility of rain.

Are there toilet facilities on the mountain?

For both Mt Kilimanjaro and Meru, we would be providing chemical toilets, which are transported up the mountain by the team of porters. We also supply the group with toilet rolls and treated water. For Marangu Route (Mt Kilimanjaro), there will be public toilet available on the each camp.

What is the food like on the mountain?

We provide our climbers with carefully selected ingredients that will give you the required nutrients for an intense trek. We can also cater to all of your special dietary requirements for all your meals. Snacks such as muffins, cookies are also provided during breaks, paired with coffee or tea, or hot chocolate!

What about last minute changes?

If a client requests last minute change to the safari itinerary including accommodations, flights, services, etc. the client is responsible for any additional expenses as a result of that change. Tanzania Safari Explorers is not responsible for any airline changes or costs incurred as a result of those changes, including airline schedules, fares, cancellations, over-bookings or damage to or loss of baggage and property. Any and all claims for any loss or injury suffered on any airline must be made directly with the airline involved. Air schedule changes may necessitate additional nights being added to your safari. Again, these schedule changes are beyond the control of Tanzania Safari Explorers and any additional costs resulting from such changes are the responsibility of the client. Tanzania Safari Explorers shall not be held liable for any delays or additional costs incurred as a result of airlines not running according to schedule.

What about clean water on the trek?

All of the water we supply our climbers are treated and filtered using the Katadyn water system, which ensures top quality water daily for drinking and food preparation.

Is my health monitored throughout the trek?

A very careful approach is undertaken. We carry full medical supplies that could possibly be required from oxygen tanks to resuscitation equipment. Everyone is assessed daily, both morning and evening for; respiratory rate, heart rate, blood pressure and O2 saturation levels. We can also provide full medical support with a qualified expedition doctor, if needed, at additional costs per group.

Do I need other vaccinations?

Aside from Malaria and Yellow Fever, there may be other vaccination and medications to take prior to your trip to Tanzania. Please consult with your family doctor, and visit a travel clinic in your area to receive specific medical consultation before your trip. Please note that all shots and medications are recommended to be taken and prescribed at least 3-4 weeks prior to travel. Please discuss the following vaccination recommendations with your doctor or travel clinic:  Hepatitis A, B  Yellow Fever  Booster doses for Tetanus-diphtheria and polio vaccine  Anti-malarial drugs  Various antibiotics such as Cipro  Diarrhea medicine.

How do I shower/clean myself on the mountain?

Each morning and evening, our climbers will receive a bowl of warm water and soap for washing. We also recommend packing baby wipes for regular cleaning purposes on each day.
