Machame Route

The second most popular and indeed one of the most beautiful routes up the mountain is the Machame Route. Also known as the Whisky Route, this trail is both longer and slightly more challenging than the Marangu and better suited to the slightly more adventurous hiker.

Marangu Route

Marangu offer relatively low scenic variation and it is largely up and back on the same trail. It is the only non-camping route, with sleeping huts at each overnight stop. As always with mountains, every route has its advantages and drawbacks.

Umbwe Route

he Umbwe route, which is based in the south, is a classic 6 day tour and is by far the most difficult one offered on Kilimanjaro. The first two days are extremely steep, muddy and generally strenuous making it only suitable for well-trained mountaineers.

Lemosho Route

Lemosho is one of four routes which approach form the west side of the mountain. These routes converge at a junction on the Shira Plateau and continue on the summit. The Shira six nights trek approaches the junction across the remote Shira Plateau

Rongai Route

The Rongai route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. Though gaining popularity amongst climbers, this route still experiences low crowds. Rongai has a more gradual slope than the mountain’s other routes.

Northern Circuit Route

The Northern Circuit route is one of the best routes on Kilimanjaro, offering nearly 360 degrees of beautiful scenery including the quiet, rarely visited northern slopes. As the longest route also has the most acclimatization time.
