Selous Game Reserve At 45,000 square kilometers, the Selous is the largest protected area in Africa and three times the size of Serengeti National Park. It is estimated that the reserve is home to 70,000 elephant, 100,000 wildebeest, 120,000 buffalo and 40,000 hippo. Hunting is permitted in the reserve and thus the area visited by photographic safaris is quite small, despite the reserve’s large area. There are only a handful of small tented camps and approximately 1% of Tanzania’s visitors include the Selous as part of their safari itinerary. Topi Adventure includes Selous as a fly-in, fly-out package to one of the park camps. Walking and boat safaris are permitted in Selous Game Reserve.
Ruaha National Park; Ruaha National Park is famous for its spectacular, untouched scenery and the Great Ruaha River. Unlike parks in northern Tanzania, Ruaha receives few visitors and thus is one of the few wildlife sanctuaries in which animals are viewed in their natural state. The park is 13,000 square kilometers and has one of the largest elephant populations in Tanzania, as well as many hippopotami and large crocodiles. Topi Adventures includes Ruaha National Park as a fly-in, fly-out package to one of the park camps.
Udzungwa Mountains National Park; Gazetted in 1992, Udzungwa is home to several endangered emdemics including three primate, two bird, and numerous plant and invertebrate species. Udzungwa is seldom-visited and offers many opportunities for hiking. Udzungwa is part of the Eastern Arc Mountain Range, one of the world’s 20 top biodiversity hotspots. The mountain range is sometimes referred to as the ‘Galapagos of Africa’ due to its large number of endemic species.
